Last-Minute Moving Tips for Metro Vancouver

Sometimes moves happen fast. A lease ends unexpectedly, a job change requires an immediate relocation, or a real estate deal closes sooner than planned. Whatever the reason, a last-minute move in Metro Vancouver is stressful — but it is manageable.

Here is how to pull it together.

Call Movers First

Before you do anything else, call moving companies. Availability is the biggest constraint in a last-minute move. In peak season (June–August), finding a crew with 1–2 weeks notice is genuinely difficult. In the off-season, it is much easier.

Call multiple companies. Be flexible on time — if Saturday is booked, ask about Sunday or a weekday. A company that cannot do your preferred date may have availability the day before or after.

At 4 You Moving, we do our best to accommodate last-minute bookings. Call 778-200-8825 and tell us your situation.

Triage Your Packing

You do not have time to pack everything perfectly. Triage:

  1. Essentials first — clothes, toiletries, medications, important documents, laptop. These go in a bag that travels with you.
  2. Valuables second — jewellery, irreplaceable items. These also travel with you, not on the truck.
  3. Everything else — pack as efficiently as you can. Use garbage bags for soft items (clothes, bedding, pillows). Use boxes for everything else. Label roughly — "kitchen," "bedroom," "bathroom" is enough.

Do not worry about perfect packing. Done is better than perfect when you are on a deadline.

Get Help

Call friends and family. A last-minute move is exactly when you need people. Even a few extra sets of hands for packing the night before makes a significant difference.

Prioritize What Moves

If you are truly short on time, consider what actually needs to move now versus what can wait. Can you leave some items for a second trip? Can you store some things temporarily? Reducing the scope of the move reduces the time pressure.

Notify the Essentials

Even in a rush, notify the critical parties:

  • Your landlord (in writing, even if it is a text)
  • BC Hydro and your internet provider
  • Canada Post (mail forwarding can be set up online in minutes)

The full address change checklist can wait until after the move — but utilities and mail forwarding should be handled as soon as possible.

At the New Address

Do not try to unpack everything immediately. Set up the essentials — bed, bathroom, kitchen basics — and leave the rest for the next few days. You moved. That is the hard part. The unpacking can happen at a human pace.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I book movers with less than a week's notice in Vancouver? Yes — last-minute bookings are possible, especially on weekdays and in the off-peak season. Call moving companies directly rather than using online forms for the fastest response. Be flexible on start time.

What should I prioritize when packing for a last-minute move? Pack essentials first — clothes, toiletries, medications, documents, and valuables. Then tackle the kitchen and bedroom. Leave large furniture for the movers and focus on getting boxes sealed and labelled.

How do I get moving boxes quickly in Vancouver? Liquor stores, grocery stores, and bookstores often have free boxes. Facebook Marketplace and Buy Nothing groups frequently have free moving boxes. In a pinch, use laundry baskets, suitcases, and garbage bags for soft items.

What is the fastest way to pack for a move? Do not sort — pack first, sort later. Use any container available. Wrap fragile items in clothing or towels instead of packing paper. Focus on getting everything into containers rather than organizing perfectly.

Will movers help me pack on short notice? Some companies offer packing services as an add-on. Call and ask — if they have crew availability, they can often accommodate same-day or next-day packing. Labour is charged at the same hourly rate.

What should I do if I cannot finish packing before the movers arrive? Tell the crew when they arrive. They can help pack remaining items at the hourly rate. Have boxes and packing materials ready so they can work efficiently. Prioritize the rooms with the most items.
