Moving in Winter in Vancouver: What to Expect and How to Prepare

Vancouver winters are not like winters in the rest of Canada. There is no blizzard to worry about, no frozen ground, and no -20°C moving day. What you do get is rain — a lot of it — shorter daylight hours, and mud.

The good news: winter is one of the best times to move in Vancouver if you plan ahead. Rates are lower, movers are more available, and you can often get your preferred date with less lead time.

Here is how to make a winter move work in your favour.

The Case for Moving in Winter

Most people avoid moving between November and February, which means:

  • Lower demand = lower rates. Moving companies are less busy in winter, and many offer better pricing or more flexibility during the off-season.
  • More availability. You are more likely to get your preferred date and time, including weekends.
  • Less competition for elevators. If you are moving into a strata building, elevator bookings are easier to secure in winter.
  • Faster service. With fewer moves on the schedule, movers can often start earlier and finish faster.

If your move date is flexible, shifting it to November through February can save you a meaningful amount — especially compared to peak season (May through September).

What Makes Winter Moves Harder in Vancouver

Rain. This is the main challenge. Vancouver averages 150–170mm of rainfall in November and December alone. On a wet moving day, you need to protect your belongings from moisture during loading and unloading.

Mud. Wet lawns and unpaved paths turn into mud quickly. This can make moving heavy furniture more difficult and can track dirt into both the old and new home.

Shorter days. Sunset in Vancouver in December is around 4:15pm. If your move starts late or runs long, you may be finishing in the dark.

Slippery surfaces. Wet wood stairs, slick concrete, and damp hardwood floors all increase the risk of slips and drops.

How to Prepare for a Rainy Moving Day

Protect Your Belongings

Use plastic wrap on upholstered furniture. Sofas, mattresses, and fabric chairs should be wrapped in plastic stretch wrap before they go on the truck. Moving blankets alone are not waterproof.

Double-box fragile items. In wet conditions, cardboard boxes can weaken faster. Use double-walled boxes for fragile items and seal all seams with extra tape.

Keep electronics in waterproof bags. Computers, TVs, and other electronics should be in their original boxes if possible. If not, wrap them in plastic before boxing.

Use plastic bins for important documents. Paper files, photo albums, and important documents should go in sealed plastic bins, not cardboard boxes.

Protect Your Floors

Rain and mud tracked through the house can damage hardwood floors and carpets. Before the movers arrive:

  • Lay down cardboard or plastic floor runners in high-traffic areas (entryways, hallways, stairs)
  • Put down a doormat at every entrance
  • Have a mop and bucket ready for any water that gets tracked in

At 4 You Moving, we use floor runners and door frame protectors on every move. We take care of your floors as well as your furniture.

Plan for Wet Conditions on the Truck

A professional moving truck has a covered cargo area, so your belongings are not exposed to rain during transit. The vulnerable moments are loading and unloading — when items are being carried between the truck and the building.

Tips:

  • Keep the truck as close to the door as possible to minimize exposure time
  • Have someone hold a large umbrella over fragile or moisture-sensitive items during the carry
  • Load electronics and upholstered items last (so they are unloaded first and spend the least time in transit)

Dress for the Weather

This sounds obvious, but it matters. Wear:

  • Waterproof boots with good grip (not running shoes)
  • Layers you can remove as you warm up
  • Waterproof outer layer
  • Work gloves (wet items are harder to grip)

Timing Your Winter Move

Start early. With sunset around 4–5pm in winter, an early start gives you the most daylight. Aim to start loading by 8–9am.

Build in extra time. Wet conditions slow everything down slightly — wet floors, careful carrying, extra wrapping. Add 30–60 minutes to your estimated move time as a buffer.

Check the forecast. Vancouver weather is variable. If you have flexibility on your exact date, check the 10-day forecast and aim for a drier window. Even in winter, Vancouver often has stretches of dry, clear days.

Avoid moving during atmospheric rivers. These multi-day heavy rain events hit Metro Vancouver several times each winter. If a major rain event is forecast for your move date, it is worth calling your movers to discuss options.

Winter Moving Checklist

  • Book movers early (even in winter, weekends fill up)
  • Confirm elevator booking if moving into a strata building
  • Buy plastic stretch wrap for upholstered furniture
  • Get double-walled boxes for fragile items
  • Prepare floor runners and door mats for both locations
  • Check the weather forecast 3–5 days before the move
  • Plan for an early start to maximize daylight
  • Have a mop, bucket, and extra towels ready
  • Keep electronics and important documents in waterproof containers
  • Confirm truck parking at both locations
