Long-Distance Moving in BC: What to Know Before You Go
Moving from Metro Vancouver to another city in BC — or from elsewhere in BC to Vancouver — is a fundamentally different experience from a local move. Here is what makes it different and how to plan yours.
How Long-Distance Moves Are Priced
Local moves in Metro Vancouver are billed hourly. Long-distance moves within BC are typically priced differently:
By weight or volume plus distance: The most common pricing model for long-distance moves. The heavier and bulkier your belongings, and the further the distance, the higher the cost.
Flat rate: Some companies offer a flat rate based on an inventory of your belongings and the distance. This provides cost certainty but requires an accurate inventory.
Hourly with a long-distance component: Some companies charge hourly for loading and unloading, plus a flat fee for the drive.
Get quotes from multiple companies and confirm exactly what is included — fuel surcharges, ferry fees (for moves to Vancouver Island), and tolls can add to the base price.
Key Differences from a Local Move
Delivery window. Unlike a local move where you receive your belongings the same day, long-distance moves may involve a delivery window of 1–5 days. Your belongings may be in transit overnight.
More planning required. You cannot easily go back for forgotten items. A thorough walkthrough before the truck leaves is essential.
Weather and road conditions. Moves to the BC Interior (Kelowna, Kamloops, Vernon, Prince George) may involve mountain driving. Winter moves on Highway 1 or the Coquihalla can be affected by snow and ice. Summer moves are more straightforward.
Ferry fees. Moves to Vancouver Island or the Gulf Islands require a BC Ferries crossing. This adds time and cost.
Planning Your Long-Distance Move
Book 4–6 weeks in advance. Long-distance moves require more coordination than local moves. During peak season (May–September), book even earlier.
Get a binding quote. For long-distance moves, a binding quote (a fixed price based on an inventory) provides more cost certainty than an estimate.
Declutter aggressively. Long-distance moves are priced by weight or volume. Every item you do not move saves money. This is the most cost-effective move to declutter before.
Plan your travel. If you are driving to your new city, plan your route and accommodation. Coordinate your arrival with the moving truck's delivery window.
What Not to Put on the Truck
For a long-distance move, the items you should not put on the truck are the same as for a local move — but the stakes are higher because you cannot easily retrieve them:
- Hazardous materials (gasoline, propane, paint, chemicals)
- Perishable food
- Plants
- Medications
- Valuables (jewellery, cash, important documents)
- Irreplaceable items
These should travel with you in your car.
