Need to move in less than a week in Metro Vancouver? It is possible — but it requires a different approach. Here is how to pull off a last-minute move without losing your mind.

Last-Minute Moving in Metro Vancouver: How to Pull It Off

Sometimes moves happen fast — a sudden job change, a lease that ends sooner than expected, or a housing situation that requires an immediate exit. A last-minute move in Metro Vancouver is stressful but manageable with the right approach.

Step 1: Book Movers Immediately

Call moving companies as soon as you know you need to move. Availability on short notice is limited, especially on weekends and at month-end.

Call, do not email. Phone calls get faster responses than emails when you are working on a tight timeline.

Be flexible on timing. If your preferred date is not available, ask about the next available slot. A weekday move is often easier to book on short notice than a weekend.

Step 2: Pack Essentials First

Do not try to pack everything perfectly. Focus on getting everything contained and labelled.

Pack in this order:

  1. Bedroom (clothes, bedding, personal items)
  2. Bathroom (toiletries, medications)
  3. Kitchen (daily use items, food)
  4. Everything else

Use whatever containers you have:

  • Boxes (get them from liquor stores, grocery stores, or Facebook Marketplace)
  • Suitcases
  • Laundry baskets
  • Garbage bags (for soft items like clothes and bedding)
  • Reusable shopping bags

Label everything. Even a quick "Kitchen" or "Bedroom" label on each container saves time at the new address.

Step 3: Triage Your Belongings

A last-minute move is not the time to move everything. Quickly sort through your belongings:

Move: Things you use regularly and genuinely need Leave/donate: Things you can replace cheaply or do not need Discard: Broken or worn-out items

The less you move, the faster and cheaper the move will be.

Step 4: Handle the Logistics

Notify your landlord. Even if you are leaving on short notice, notify your landlord in writing as soon as possible. This protects your legal position.

Set up mail forwarding. Go to canadapost.ca and set up mail forwarding. This takes 5 minutes and ensures you do not miss important mail.

Update critical contacts. Your bank and employer are the most important. Everything else can wait.

Utilities. Contact BC Hydro and your internet provider to arrange transfer. Allow a few days for processing.

What Not to Worry About

In a last-minute move, let go of:

  • Perfect organization (you can reorganize at the new address)
  • Colour coding and detailed inventory lists
  • Cleaning the old place perfectly (do your best, document with photos)
  • Unpacking immediately (give yourself a few days)
