How to Unpack After a Move: A Room-by-Room Strategy
Staring at 50 boxes in a new home can feel paralyzing. The key is to approach unpacking systematically rather than randomly — and to resist the urge to do everything at once.
The Golden Rule: One Room at a Time
Unpacking one room completely before moving to the next is far more effective than opening boxes from every room simultaneously. A fully unpacked bedroom gives you a functional space to retreat to. A half-unpacked everything gives you chaos everywhere.
Day 1: Bedroom and Bathroom
Bedroom first. Set up the bed frame, put on the sheets, and make the bed. This is the priority. After a long moving day, having a comfortable place to sleep matters more than anything else.
Also set up:
- Bedside tables and lamps
- Dresser (fold clothes in, do not worry about perfect organization yet)
- Wardrobe or closet basics
Bathroom second. Unpack toiletries, hang towels, set up the toilet paper holder. Make the bathroom fully functional.
That is enough for day 1. Order food, get some rest.
Day 2: Kitchen
The kitchen is the most time-consuming room to unpack because it has the most items and requires the most decisions about where things go.
Start with essentials:
- Coffee maker or kettle
- A few plates, glasses, and utensils
- Basic cooking equipment
Then work through the rest:
- Organize cabinets by category (baking supplies together, spices together, etc.)
- Set up the pantry
- Unpack small appliances
Tip: Do not commit to a final cabinet layout on day 2. Unpack everything and live with it for a week before deciding what goes where. You will have a much better sense of what is convenient once you start using the kitchen.
Day 3: Living Room
Set up the main living area:
- Furniture placement (this may require some rearranging)
- TV and electronics
- Bookshelves
- Decorative items (these can wait — focus on functional first)
Day 4–5: Remaining Rooms
Work through the remaining rooms — home office, kids' rooms, guest room, storage areas.
Kids' rooms: Prioritize these early. Children settle into a new home faster when their own space is set up and familiar.
Home office: If you work from home, set up your office early so you can be productive.
Storage areas: These can wait until last. Boxes going into storage do not need to be unpacked immediately.
The "Maybe" Pile
As you unpack, you will find items you are not sure about — things you kept but are not sure where they belong in the new space. Create a designated "maybe" area (a corner of the garage or a spare room) for these items. Revisit in 2–4 weeks. If you have not needed something, donate or discard it.
Disposing of Boxes
Once you have unpacked, you will have a significant number of cardboard boxes. Options:
- Recycle: Break down and put in your blue bin or take to a recycling depot
- Give away: Post on Facebook Marketplace or a local Buy Nothing group — boxes go quickly
- Return: If you rented boxes, return them to the rental company
