How to Pack Bedroom Furniture for a Move

Bedroom furniture is bulky, heavy, and easy to damage if packed wrong. Here is how to prepare your bed, dresser, nightstands, and wardrobe for a safe move in Metro Vancouver.

How to Pack Bedroom Furniture for a Move

The bedroom is usually the most time-consuming room to move. Beds are large and awkward, dressers are heavy, and wardrobes are full of things that need to be packed carefully. Here is how to prepare each piece.

Bed Frame

Disassemble it yourself before the crew arrives. This is the single biggest time-saver in a bedroom move.

Steps:

  1. Remove the mattress and lean it against a wall
  2. Remove the box spring (if applicable)
  3. Remove the slats or platform base
  4. Disassemble the headboard, footboard, and side rails
  5. Put all hardware (bolts, screws, brackets, Allen keys) in a zip-lock bag and tape it to the headboard or frame

Label the bag clearly: BED FRAME HARDWARE — MASTER BEDROOM

If you are not sure how to disassemble your specific bed frame, take photos before you start so you have a reference for reassembly.

Mattress

Use a mattress bag — a plastic cover that protects the mattress from dirt, moisture, and tears during the move. They cost $5–$15 at moving supply stores and are worth every cent.

The crew will also wrap the mattress in moving blankets for additional protection. Mattresses should be transported upright (on their side) in the truck, not flat.

Dresser

Remove heavy items from drawers — jeans, sweaters, and heavy clothing make the dresser difficult and unsafe to lift. Leave light items (t-shirts, underwear, socks) in the drawers.

Secure the drawers with stretch wrap so they do not slide open during the move. Wrap the entire dresser horizontally 2–3 times.

Remove mirrors from dressers with attached mirrors. Wrap the mirror separately in bubble wrap and moving blankets, and transport it separately. A mirror attached to a dresser during transport is at high risk of breaking.

Wardrobe and Armoire

Large wardrobes and armoires are often the heaviest pieces in a bedroom. If the wardrobe has removable shelves or drawers, take them out before the crew arrives — this reduces weight and makes the piece easier to manoeuvre through doorways.

For hanging clothes inside a wardrobe, use wardrobe boxes or the garbage bag method (see our guide on packing clothes).

Nightstands

Nightstands are usually small and straightforward. Remove any items from drawers and pack them separately. If the nightstand has a lamp, remove the lamp and pack it separately.

Lamps

Remove lampshades and pack them separately — they are fragile and easily crushed. Wrap the shade in packing paper and place it in a box with cushioning. The lamp base can be wrapped in moving blankets.

Mirrors and Wall Art

Mirrors and framed artwork need special protection:

  • Wrap in bubble wrap (at least 2 layers)
  • Place in a mirror box or between two pieces of cardboard
  • Label FRAGILE — MIRROR — DO NOT LAY FLAT
  • Transport upright, never flat

What the Crew Handles

4 You Moving provides moving blankets at no charge and shrink wrap at $50/roll or $25 partial. The crew will:

  • Wrap all furniture in moving blankets
  • Use shrink wrap to secure blankets and protect upholstered surfaces
  • Use dollies and furniture sliders for heavy pieces
  • Reassemble furniture at the new address if you request it
