How to Pack Fragile Items for a Move in Metro Vancouver
Broken dishes, cracked mirrors, and damaged electronics are among the most common moving complaints — and almost all of them are preventable with proper packing. Here is how professional movers handle fragile items, and how you can apply the same techniques at home.
The Golden Rules of Packing Fragile Items
Use the right box size. Heavy items like dishes go in small boxes. Large boxes packed with heavy fragile items are hard to carry safely and more likely to be dropped.
Never leave empty space. Empty space in a box allows items to shift and collide. Fill every gap with packing paper, bubble wrap, or clothing.
Wrap every item individually. Each piece needs its own layer of protection — do not stack unwrapped items together.
Mark boxes clearly. Write "FRAGILE" and "THIS SIDE UP" on every side of the box, not just the top.
Dishes and Plates
- Line the bottom of the box with 3–4 inches of crumpled packing paper or bubble wrap.
- Wrap each plate individually in packing paper, starting from a corner and rolling diagonally.
- Pack plates vertically (on their edge), not flat. Plates are much stronger on their edge and far less likely to crack.
- Place heavier items at the bottom, lighter items on top.
- Fill all gaps with crumpled paper before closing the box.
Glasses and Stemware
- Stuff the inside of each glass with crumpled packing paper.
- Wrap the outside in 2–3 layers of packing paper or bubble wrap.
- Pack upright in a divided box if possible (dish pack boxes with cardboard dividers are ideal).
- Never stack glasses directly on top of each other without padding.
Artwork and Mirrors
- Wrap in several layers of bubble wrap and secure with tape.
- For large mirrors or framed artwork, use mirror boxes (available at moving supply stores).
- Mark "FRAGILE — DO NOT LAY FLAT" on all sides.
- Transport artwork vertically, not flat.
Electronics
- Use original packaging whenever possible — it is designed for the device.
- If original packaging is not available, wrap in bubble wrap and pack snugly in a box with padding on all sides.
- Remove batteries from remotes and small electronics.
- Photograph cable setups before disconnecting so you can reconnect easily.
- Transport TVs vertically, never flat.
Lamps and Lampshades
- Remove bulbs and pack separately.
- Wrap lamp bases in bubble wrap.
- Pack lampshades in their own box with crumpled paper — never stack items on top of a lampshade.
What to Use When You Run Out of Bubble Wrap
Packing paper is the professional's first choice — it is clean, flexible, and effective. In a pinch, you can also use:
- Towels and linens (wrap dishes and glasses)
- Clothing (pad the inside of boxes)
- Newspaper (works but can leave ink on items)

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best way to pack dishes for a move? Pack plates vertically like records with packing paper between each one. Use a dish pack box with cell dividers for glasses. Pack in small to medium boxes — never overfill.
How do I pack fragile items for a move in Vancouver? Wrap each fragile item individually in packing paper or bubble wrap. Use cell-divided boxes for glasses and stemware. Mark boxes as fragile on the top and sides. Pack fragile boxes last so they come off the truck first.
Should I empty dresser drawers before movers arrive? Yes for heavy items. Lightweight clothing can stay in drawers for short carries, but heavy items should be removed to prevent damage to the furniture.
What is the H-taping method for moving boxes? Tape along the centre seam of the box bottom, then add two strips across the sides in an H pattern. This significantly strengthens the bottom and prevents boxes from failing under weight.
How far in advance should I start packing for a move? Start packing non-essentials 4–6 weeks before your move. Pack daily-use items in the final week. Everything should be sealed and labelled before the movers arrive.
What should I put in my essentials box for moving day? Phone charger, toiletries, medications, a change of clothes, coffee maker, a few dishes, dish soap, and important documents. Label it OPEN FIRST and load it last so it comes off the truck first.
