How to Pack Kitchen Appliances for a Move
Kitchen appliances range from small countertop items to large built-in units. Each requires different preparation. Here is how to handle them for a move in Metro Vancouver.
Small Appliances
Small appliances — toasters, coffee makers, blenders, stand mixers, air fryers — are straightforward to pack with the right approach.
Use original boxes when possible. Original packaging is designed for the exact dimensions of the appliance and provides the best protection. If you kept the boxes, use them.
If you do not have original boxes:
- Wrap the appliance in bubble wrap or moving blankets
- Place in a box that fits with at least 2 inches of cushioning on all sides
- Fill empty space with crumpled packing paper
- Seal and label the box with the appliance name and FRAGILE
Before packing:
- Empty and clean all appliances
- Remove detachable parts (coffee maker carafes, blender jars, stand mixer bowls) and pack them separately
- Coil cords neatly and secure with a twist tie or rubber band
- Tape the cord to the appliance or pack it in the same box
Microwave
- Remove the turntable plate and pack it separately wrapped in packing paper
- Wrap the microwave in moving blankets
- Use the original box if available, or a box with adequate cushioning
- Label FRAGILE — MICROWAVE
Refrigerator
The fridge requires preparation at least 24 hours before moving day.
Steps:
- Empty the fridge completely — eat, donate, or discard all food
- Turn off the fridge and unplug it
- Defrost the freezer — place towels on the floor to catch water
- Remove all shelves and drawers and pack them separately (wrap glass shelves in bubble wrap)
- Clean the interior with a mild cleaner
- Leave the doors open to air out and prevent mould
- Secure the doors with tape or rope on moving day so they do not swing open
The crew will wrap the fridge in moving blankets and transport it upright. Fridges should not be laid on their side — the compressor oil can flow into the cooling lines and cause damage.
At the new address: Wait at least 2–4 hours after the fridge is in place before plugging it in. This allows the compressor oil to settle.
Stove and Oven
Gas stoves: Must be disconnected by a licensed gas fitter before moving. Do not disconnect a gas appliance yourself.
Electric stoves: Can be unplugged. Remove the burner elements and drip pans and pack them separately.
Clean the stove before moving — grease and food residue can cause odours and attract pests during transport.
Dishwasher
Built-in dishwashers are typically disconnected and moved by the crew. The appliance needs to be disconnected from the water supply and drain before moving day. If you are not comfortable doing this yourself, arrange for a plumber.
Washing Machine and Dryer
Washers and dryers need to be disconnected before the crew arrives.
Washing machine: If you have the original transit bolts, install them to secure the drum before moving. Without transit bolts, the drum can be damaged during transport. Ask your appliance manufacturer or a technician if you are unsure.
Dryer: Disconnect the power cord and the vent hose. For gas dryers, have a licensed technician disconnect the gas line.
What the Crew Handles
4 You Moving wraps all appliances in moving blankets and uses dollies and appliance hand trucks for heavy items. The crew does not disconnect gas appliances or plumbing — those need to be handled before moving day.
