Ultimate Moving Checklist for BC Residents

Moving in British Columbia involves more than packing boxes. There are provincial address updates, strata rules to follow, utility transfers to arrange, and a dozen other details that are easy to miss in the rush of moving day. This checklist covers everything — organized by timeline so nothing falls through the cracks.

8 Weeks Before Moving Day

Book your movers. Summer and month-end dates fill up fast in Metro Vancouver. If you are moving between May and September, or at the end of any month, book 6–8 weeks in advance. Get a free quote from 4 You Moving to lock in your date.

Give notice to your landlord. In BC, most tenancy agreements require one full rental period of notice. Check your lease and submit written notice on time to avoid losing your damage deposit.

Start decluttering. Moving is the best time to get rid of things you no longer need. Donate, sell, or discard anything you would not want to pay to move. The less you have, the faster and cheaper the move.

Research your new neighbourhood. Find the nearest grocery store, pharmacy, transit stops, and schools if you have children. Knowing the area before you arrive reduces stress on the other side.

6 Weeks Before Moving Day

Gather packing supplies. You will need boxes in multiple sizes, packing tape, bubble wrap or packing paper, and markers for labelling. Start collecting boxes from liquor stores, grocery stores, or order new ones.

Begin packing non-essentials. Start with items you rarely use — seasonal clothing, books, decorative items, extra linens. Label every box with its contents and destination room.

Notify important contacts of your upcoming address change. Start with your employer, bank, and any government services. A full list is in the address change section below.

Book elevator access. If you are moving from or into a condo or apartment building, contact building management to reserve the elevator. Most buildings require at least one week's notice.

4 Weeks Before Moving Day

Confirm your moving booking. Contact your moving company to confirm the date, time, truck size, and number of movers. Confirm the pickup and delivery addresses.

Transfer or cancel utilities. Contact BC Hydro, FortisBC, your internet provider, and any other utilities. Schedule disconnection at your old address and connection at your new one for moving day or the day before.

Update your address with Canada Post. Set up mail forwarding through Canada Post to catch anything that goes to your old address. This buys you time to update individual accounts.

Notify your insurance providers. Home insurance, tenant insurance, and auto insurance all need to reflect your new address. Your rates may change based on your new location.

2 Weeks Before Moving Day

Pack the majority of your home. By this point, most rooms should be packed except for daily essentials. Keep out what you need for the final two weeks and pack everything else.

Disassemble large furniture. Beds, wardrobes, large desks, and shelving units are easier to move in pieces. Disassemble them a few days before the move so the crew can load immediately on moving day.

Confirm parking at both addresses. Check whether you need to arrange temporary no-parking zones at either address. In Vancouver, you can apply for a temporary no-parking permit through the City of Vancouver.

Prepare an essentials box. Pack a box or bag with everything you will need on moving day and the first night: phone charger, toiletries, a change of clothes, medications, snacks, and important documents.

Moving Day

Be present when the crew arrives. Walk the movers through the home and point out anything fragile, anything that needs special handling, or anything that is not being moved.

Do a final walkthrough before leaving. Check every room, closet, cabinet, and outdoor space. Check the attic, basement, and garage if applicable.

Take meter readings. Photograph your electricity and gas meters at both addresses on moving day. This protects you if there is a billing dispute later.

Hand over keys. Return keys, fobs, and parking passes to your landlord or building management. Get written confirmation if possible.

Settling In at Your New Home

Do a condition inspection. If you are renting, complete a move-in condition inspection with your landlord within the first few days. Document any existing damage with photos and keep a copy.

Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Check that all detectors are working and replace batteries if needed.

Locate the main water shutoff. Know where to turn off the water in case of a leak.

Introduce yourself to neighbours. A brief introduction goes a long way, especially if you have a large household or pets.

Update your address with remaining contacts. Work through the list above and check off each one as you go.
