How to Move Your Home Office in Metro Vancouver
A home office is one of the most complex rooms to move. Electronics, cables, monitors, and a workspace that needs to be functional quickly all require careful planning. Here is how to do it right.
Before You Pack: Preparation
Back up everything. Before you touch a single cable, back up all important files to the cloud or an external drive. Equipment can be damaged during a move — your data should be safe regardless.
Take photos of your setup. Photograph your desk setup from multiple angles before disconnecting anything. This gives you a reference for reconnection at the new address.
Label every cable. This is the most important step for a fast reconnection. Before disconnecting, label each cable with a piece of tape and a marker:
- "Monitor 1 power"
- "Monitor 1 DisplayPort"
- "USB hub"
- "Keyboard"
- "External drive"
Use a consistent labelling system. You will thank yourself when setting up at the new address.
Packing Electronics
Computers and towers: Use original boxes if you have them. If not, wrap in moving blankets and pack in a box with cushioning on all sides. Transport in your car if possible.
Laptops: Always transport in your car in a padded bag or sleeve. Never put a laptop in the moving truck.
Monitors: Use original boxes if you have them. If not, wrap each monitor in moving blankets and transport in your car. Never lay flat-screen monitors face-down — the screen can crack under its own weight.
External drives and USB hubs: Pack in a padded bag or box with cushioning. Transport in your car.
Printers and scanners: Use original boxes if available. Otherwise, remove any paper trays, wrap in moving blankets, and pack in a box.
Packing Cables
Bundle cables by device using zip ties or velcro straps. Pack each bundle with the device it belongs to. This makes reconnection much faster.
For a complex setup with many cables, consider a cable organizer bag or box specifically for cables.
Packing the Desk
Standing desks: Most can be moved assembled if they fit through doorways. Remove the desktop surface if it is separate. For electric standing desks, disconnect the power cable and secure it.
Regular desks: Remove drawers and pack them separately. Wrap the desk in moving blankets.
Desk chairs: Move assembled. The crew will handle these with dollies.
Setting Up at the New Address
Set up your home office as early as possible at the new address — ideally on day 1 or 2. Having a functional workspace reduces stress and allows you to return to normal productivity quickly.
Setup order:
- Place the desk and chair
- Set up the computer
- Connect monitors (refer to your photos and cable labels)
- Connect peripherals (keyboard, mouse, USB hub)
- Connect internet
- Test everything before unpacking the rest of the office
