Moving Tips for Remote Workers in Metro Vancouver

Working from home while moving adds a layer of complexity that office workers do not face. Your workspace, your equipment, and your internet connection are all part of the move — and losing any of them affects your ability to work.

Plan Around Your Work Schedule

Take time off around moving day. If possible, schedule your move on a day when you have no critical deadlines or meetings. Even a half-day buffer before and after moving day reduces stress significantly.

Communicate with clients or employers. If you are taking time off around the move, give advance notice. Set an out-of-office message for moving day.

Avoid month-end moves if you have month-end deadlines. Many remote workers have billing or reporting deadlines at month-end. Moving at the same time adds unnecessary pressure.

Internet Continuity

Internet is your lifeline as a remote worker. A gap in connectivity is a gap in productivity.

Schedule installation early. Contact your internet provider as soon as you have a confirmed move date. Allow 1–2 weeks for installation appointments — new addresses sometimes require infrastructure work.

Plan for a gap. Even with advance planning, there may be a day or two without internet at the new address. Options:

  • Use your phone as a hotspot (check your data plan)
  • Work from a cafe, library, or co-working space temporarily
  • Ask your provider about a temporary portable internet device

Check coverage at the new address. Not all providers serve all addresses in Metro Vancouver. Confirm that your preferred provider serves your new address before you move.

Moving Your Home Office

Pack your home office last. Your workspace should be the last thing you pack so you can work until the day before the move.

Set up your home office first. At the new address, set up your workspace before unpacking anything else (except the bedroom). Having a functional workspace reduces stress and allows you to return to normal productivity quickly.

Label all cables before disconnecting. Take a photo of your cable setup before disconnecting everything. Label each cable with a piece of tape and a marker. This makes reconnection much faster.

Back up everything before the move. Back up all important files to the cloud or an external drive before moving day. Equipment can be damaged during a move — your data should be safe regardless.

Moving Monitors and Computer Equipment

Use original boxes. Original packaging is designed for the exact dimensions of the equipment and provides the best protection.

If you do not have original boxes:

  • Wrap monitors in moving blankets
  • Transport in your car if possible (not in the moving truck)
  • Pack computers and laptops in padded bags or boxes with cushioning

Transport valuables in your car. Laptops, external drives, and other high-value equipment should travel with you in your car, not in the moving truck.

Setting Up Your New Workspace

Take time to set up your new workspace thoughtfully. Consider:

  • Natural light (reduces eye strain)
  • Ergonomics (desk height, monitor position, chair)
  • Noise levels (proximity to street, neighbours, common areas)
  • Background for video calls

A well-set-up workspace makes the transition back to full productivity much faster.
