How to Survive Your First Night in a New Home
After a long moving day, the last thing you want is to dig through 40 boxes looking for your toothbrush. The first night in a new home is much more comfortable with a little advance preparation.
The First-Night Bag
Pack a dedicated bag before moving day with everything you need for the first 24 hours. This bag travels with you in the car — not in the moving truck — and gets unpacked before anything else.
What to include:
Bedroom:
- Sheets, pillow, and blanket (or sleeping bag)
- Pyjamas and a change of clothes for the next day
Bathroom:
- Toothbrush and toothpaste
- Soap and shampoo
- Towel
- Any daily medications
- Basic skincare items
Kitchen:
- Toilet paper (critical — do not forget this)
- Paper plates and plastic cutlery (for the first meal)
- Coffee maker or kettle and coffee/tea (if you are a morning coffee person)
- Snacks for the evening
Tech:
- Phone charger
- Laptop charger if needed
- Any device chargers for the household
Documents:
- New address confirmation
- Moving company receipt
- Any documents you need in the next 24 hours
What to Set Up First
1. The bedroom. After a long moving day, having a comfortable place to sleep is the priority. Set up the bed frame (if you disassembled it), put on the sheets, and make the bed. Everything else can wait.
2. The bathroom. Put out towels, set up toiletries, and make sure the bathroom is functional.
3. That is it for tonight. The kitchen, living room, and everything else can wait until tomorrow when you are rested.
What to Check When You Arrive
Before the movers leave, do a quick check of the new home:
- Utilities: Test the lights, hot water, and heat or air conditioning
- Locks: Test all door locks and window locks
- Smoke detectors: Test that they are working
- Electrical panel: Locate it and make sure no breakers are tripped
- Water shutoff: Know where the main water shutoff valve is in case of a plumbing emergency
Food for the First Night
Do not try to cook on the first night. Order delivery or pick up food on the way to the new address. Keep it simple — pizza, sushi, Thai food, whatever your family likes.
If you have children, having their favourite food on the first night in the new home is a small gesture that makes a big difference.
Managing the Boxes
Resist the urge to unpack everything on the first night. Trying to unpack while exhausted leads to poor decisions about where things go and a lot of reorganizing later.
Instead, stack boxes in one area of each room (against a wall, out of the main traffic path) so the space feels livable even with boxes present. You can unpack systematically over the next few days.
