How to Prepare Your Home for Movers in Metro Vancouver
The more prepared your home is when the crew arrives, the faster and smoother your move will be. Since local moves are billed hourly, preparation directly reduces your bill.
The Night Before
Finish packing. Every box should be packed, sealed, and labelled before you go to sleep. Moving day is not the time to be packing the last few items.
Disassemble large furniture. Bed frames, large desks, and flat-pack furniture that you plan to disassemble yourself should be done the night before. Keep all hardware in labelled zip-lock bags taped to the furniture piece.
Clear the path. Walk through every room and clear the path from the furniture to the front door. Remove rugs that could be a trip hazard, move small items out of the way, and make sure doorways are clear.
Move cars. Move your car and any other vehicles out of the driveway so the truck can park as close to the door as possible.
Prepare your first-night bag. Pack a separate bag with everything you need for the first night at the new address. This bag travels with you in the car.
Confirm the booking. Check that you have the crew's contact number and the confirmed start time.
The Morning of the Move
Lay floor protection. Put down rosin paper or cardboard along the main traffic path — from the front door through the hallways to each room. This protects hardwood and tile from scratches.
Prop open doors. Prop open interior doors along the main traffic path so the crew does not have to manage doors while carrying furniture.
Clear the parking area. Make sure the driveway or street parking area where the truck will park is clear.
Have water available. Moving is physical work. Have cold water available for the crew throughout the move.
Separate items that are not moving. If there are items in the home that are not moving (items for donation, items being left for the new owners), clearly separate them and tell the crew which items are not going on the truck.
At the New Address
Arrive before the truck. Drive ahead to the new address and prepare:
- Unlock the door
- Clear the path from the entrance to each room
- Have a rough floor plan in mind for furniture placement
- Prop open doors
Be specific about furniture placement. Once a heavy piece is in place, moving it again takes time. Know where you want each piece before the crew arrives.
What the Crew Handles
4 You Moving wraps all furniture in moving blankets at no charge. The crew brings dollies, furniture sliders, and all necessary equipment. You do not need to provide any moving equipment.
