Summer Moving Tips for Metro Vancouver
Summer is the busiest moving season in Metro Vancouver — and for good reason. The weather is good, school is out, and lease agreements often end in June or August. But peak season also means tighter availability, more competition for moving dates, and the challenge of moving in the heat. Here is how to plan a smooth summer move.
Book Early
This is the most important summer moving tip. July and August are the busiest months for moving companies in Metro Vancouver. End-of-month dates in summer can book up 6–8 weeks in advance.
Book 4–6 weeks ahead for any summer move. For end-of-July or end-of-August moves, book as early as possible.
Start Early in the Day
Summer days in Vancouver can get warm, especially in July and August. Starting your move at 7–8am means you are doing the heaviest work in the cooler morning hours.
By noon, the temperature is at its peak. By starting early, you can often finish the loading phase before the hottest part of the day.
Keep Everyone Hydrated
Moving is physical work. In summer heat, dehydration is a real risk — for you and for the crew.
- Have cold water available throughout the move
- Offer sports drinks for longer moves
- Take breaks in the shade during the hottest part of the day
Protect Temperature-Sensitive Items
Some items are damaged by heat and should not travel in the moving truck on a hot summer day:
- Candles: Melt in a hot truck
- Vinyl records: Warp in heat
- Chocolate and food: Melt or spoil
- Wine: Heat damages wine
- Medications: Some medications require temperature control
- Electronics: Extreme heat can damage electronics
- Artwork: Heat and humidity can damage paintings and prints
Transport these items in your air-conditioned car.
Keep the New Home Cool
If you are moving into a home that has been closed up, it may be very hot when you arrive. Before the crew starts unloading:
- Open windows and doors to ventilate
- Turn on the air conditioning if available
- Close blinds on south and west-facing windows to block direct sun
Protect Your Belongings from Sun
Direct sunlight through truck windows can fade upholstered furniture and damage artwork. The crew wraps furniture in moving blankets, which provides some protection. For particularly sun-sensitive items, add an extra layer of protection.
Parking and Access
Summer weekends in Metro Vancouver are busy. Parking near your old or new address may be more difficult than usual. Check parking restrictions and plan for the truck's parking needs in advance.
