Moving Furniture in Rainy Weather: Vancouver Tips

Vancouver gets roughly 160 rainy days a year. If you are moving between October and April, there is a good chance it will be wet on moving day. The good news: professional movers in this city are used to it. Rain does not have to mean damaged furniture, soaked boxes, or ruined floors — as long as you know what to do.

Here is how to handle a rainy move in Metro Vancouver.

Why Rain Is Manageable (Not a Reason to Postpone)

The instinct to postpone a rainy move is understandable, but it is usually the wrong call. Rescheduling a move is expensive — you may lose your deposit, your new tenancy start date does not change, and getting a new booking on short notice is difficult.

Vancouver rain is also rarely the kind of downpour that makes moving impossible. Most days it is a steady drizzle, not a storm. Experienced movers have the equipment and the process to handle it without incident.

The key is preparation — on both the moving company's side and yours.

How Professional Movers Protect Furniture in the Rain

Shrink wrap for upholstered items. Sofas, armchairs, mattresses, and box springs are wrapped in plastic shrink wrap before they leave the building. This keeps moisture out completely. At 4 You Moving, shrink wrap is $50/roll or $25 for a partial roll.

Moving blankets for hard surfaces. Wood furniture, dressers, tables, and appliances are wrapped in thick moving blankets. These protect against both moisture and impact during loading.

Floor runners at both addresses. The crew lays rubber-backed floor runners over hardwood, laminate, and carpet at the entrance and along the main path through the home. This prevents wet boot prints and mud from damaging your floors.

Covered loading. Whenever possible, the truck is backed up close to the entrance to minimize the distance items travel in the open air. In heavy rain, the crew works quickly and efficiently to reduce exposure time.

Dry truck interior. The cargo area of the truck stays dry. Items are loaded and secured before the truck moves, so nothing shifts or gets wet in transit.

What You Can Do to Help

The crew handles the heavy lifting and the protection, but a few things on your end make a rainy move go much smoother.

Have boxes sealed and stacked. Open boxes absorb moisture. Make sure every box is fully taped before moving day. Stack them near the door so the crew can load quickly without lingering in the rain.

Protect electronics before the crew arrives. Wrap computers, monitors, and other electronics in plastic bags or garbage bags before placing them in boxes. Even inside a box, moisture can seep in if the box gets wet.

Lay down your own floor protection. Put old towels or a doormat at the entrance to catch water from boots. The crew will bring floor runners, but having something at the door from the start keeps the first few minutes cleaner.

Keep a supply of dry towels. Have a stack of old towels ready. The crew can dry their hands and wipe down any surfaces that get damp during the move.

Clear the path to the truck. Remove any obstacles between the door and the truck. The faster the crew can move, the less time items spend in the rain.

Special Considerations for Condos and Apartments

Rain adds complexity to condo moves because of the distance between the unit and the truck.

Book the elevator in advance. This is always important, but especially in rain. A reserved elevator means the crew can move quickly without waiting, which reduces the time items spend in the lobby or hallway.

Check the loading bay. Many Vancouver condo buildings have a covered loading bay or underground parking. If yours does, arrange for the truck to use it. This eliminates rain exposure almost entirely.

Protect the lobby floor. Building management may require you to protect the lobby floor during a move. The crew will bring floor runners, but confirm with your building what is required.

Furniture That Needs Extra Care in Wet Weather

Some items are more vulnerable to moisture than others. Give these extra attention on a rainy move day.

Mattresses. Always shrink-wrap mattresses. A wet mattress can develop mould within 24–48 hours if it does not dry properly.

Upholstered furniture. Sofas and armchairs absorb moisture quickly. Shrink wrap is essential.

Solid wood furniture. Wood can warp if it gets wet and stays wet. Blankets plus a quick dry-down after unloading is the right approach.

Cardboard boxes. Cardboard loses structural integrity when wet. If a box gets damp, transfer its contents to a dry box or a plastic bin as soon as possible.

Electronics. Never leave electronics in a damp environment. If a device gets wet, do not turn it on until it has fully dried.

After the Move: Drying Out

Once everything is inside, take a few minutes to check for moisture.

  • Unwrap shrink-wrapped items and let them air out
  • Wipe down any surfaces that feel damp
  • Leave interior doors open to promote airflow
  • If a mattress or sofa feels damp, stand it upright against a wall to dry before using it

In most cases, a well-executed rainy move leaves nothing wet. But a quick check after unloading gives you peace of mind.
