Fall Moving Tips for Metro Vancouver
Fall is one of the best times to move in Metro Vancouver. The summer rush is over, availability is better, and the cooler temperatures make physical work more comfortable. The main challenge is rain — and with the right preparation, that is manageable.
Why Fall Is a Good Time to Move
Better availability. The summer peak (July–August) is over. Moving companies have more availability in September and October, and you have more choice of dates and times.
Cooler temperatures. Moving in 15°C is far more comfortable than moving in 30°C. The crew works more efficiently and there is less risk of heat-related issues.
Same rates. 4 You Moving charges the same rate year-round. You get the benefits of off-peak availability without paying more.
Less competition for elevators. In condo buildings, freight elevator demand drops significantly after the summer rush. Booking your preferred time slot is easier.
Handling Rain
Vancouver's rain season typically starts in October, though September can bring wet weather too. Rain does not stop a move — professional movers work in all weather — but it requires some preparation.
Protect cardboard boxes. Wet cardboard loses structural integrity and can collapse. Cover boxes with plastic wrap or garbage bags during loading and unloading. Work quickly when moving boxes from the building to the truck.
Use the truck as a dry staging area. Load items into the truck as quickly as possible to get them out of the rain. The truck interior stays dry.
Have towels at both addresses. Wet items can be wiped down before being placed in the new home. Towels at the entrance of both addresses help.
Protect floors. Wet shoes track water and mud. Lay floor runners or cardboard at both addresses to protect floors from wet footprints.
Wrap electronics and sensitive items. Electronics, documents, and artwork should be wrapped in plastic or transported in your car rather than in the truck during heavy rain.
What to Wear
Dress in layers for a fall move:
- A moisture-wicking base layer (not cotton — it stays wet)
- A mid-layer for warmth
- A waterproof outer layer if rain is expected
- Waterproof shoes or boots
You will warm up quickly from the physical activity, so layers you can remove are better than one heavy layer.
Daylight
Fall days are shorter than summer days. By late October, it gets dark by 5:30–6pm. For large moves, start early (7–8am) to ensure you finish before dark.
