Winter Moving Tips for Metro Vancouver
Vancouver winters are mild by Canadian standards — no deep freezes, minimal snow — but rain is a constant companion from November through March. Here is how to plan a smooth winter move and handle the wet weather.
Why Winter Is a Good Time to Move
Best availability. November through February are the quietest months for moving companies in Metro Vancouver. You have the most choice of dates, times, and crew availability.
No heat stress. Moving in 8°C is far more comfortable than moving in 30°C. The crew works efficiently and there is no risk of heat-related issues.
Same rates. 4 You Moving charges the same rate year-round. You get the benefits of off-peak availability without paying more.
Less competition. Freight elevator slots in condo buildings are easy to book. Parking is less competitive.
The Main Challenge: Rain
Vancouver's winter rain is persistent rather than dramatic. Here is how to handle it:
Protect cardboard boxes. Wet cardboard loses structural integrity and can collapse under the weight of stacked boxes. Cover boxes with plastic wrap or garbage bags during loading and unloading.
Use the truck as a dry staging area. Load items into the truck as quickly as possible. The truck interior stays dry.
Protect floors. Wet shoes track water and mud. Lay floor runners or cardboard at both addresses. Have towels at the entrance of both addresses.
Transport sensitive items in your car. Electronics, documents, artwork, and anything that cannot get wet should travel in your car rather than in the truck.
Have extra towels. Wet items can be wiped down before being placed in the new home.
Daylight
Winter days in Metro Vancouver are short. In December and January, it gets dark by 4:30–5pm.
Start early. For large moves, start at 7–8am to ensure you finish before dark. Loading and unloading in the dark is slower and less safe.
Plan for the short day. If your move is large, discuss the timeline with your moving company when booking. A 3-person crew may be worth the extra cost to ensure you finish before dark.
Occasional Snow
Snow is rare in Metro Vancouver but does occur, typically in December and January. Most years see 1–3 snowfall events.
If snow is forecast:
- Contact your moving company to discuss options
- Light snow (1–3 cm) typically does not affect moves
- Heavy snow or ice may require rescheduling
- Check road conditions on the day of the move
What to Wear
Dress in waterproof, layered clothing:
- Waterproof outer layer
- Warm mid-layer
- Moisture-wicking base layer (not cotton)
- Waterproof boots or shoes
You will warm up from the physical activity, so layers you can remove are better than one heavy layer.
